What's the worst single year in US history?

-1861

1929

1941

2001from your dates, 1929, because of the Great Depression, leading to larger government, but honestly the single worst year in US history was 1913.

Everything we're experiencing today (the economy, war, inflation, bad government) started in 1913.

1) The federal reserve was created

2) The 16th amendment reinstated the federal income tax

3) the 17th amendment killed states rights with the direct election of senators

4) President Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated.
Probably 2001 because it spelled the decade long decline (economic, political, social, cultural) decline of USA with 3000 civilian deaths and wars that been on going ever since. 1941 was a cataclysm for entering into WWII that USA pretended that did not involve it. The deaths were not civilians and did not hit USA mainland as did 9-11. Attack on Pearl Harbor was not as unexpected worldwide as was attack on NYC and Washington. Plus the WWII helped not only overcome Great Depression, but put USA into superpower position. 1929 was bad for the investors, but common person did not fare much better through 1920's. Majority of people had stagnant incomes, and recession in agriculture was already in progress two years and Florida was in economic depression since 1925 as results of hurricanes and failed orange crops. Fall on the Wall Street only showed that the economy was on shaky ground and all prosperity was illusion. 1861 was beginning of tragedy, from which USA emerged not only stronger, but it gave hope for better life to enslaved fellow citizens. I do not see, how would people of African ancestry see the 1861 as a tragedy. It paved a way to overthrow the most disgusting nature of human relationship, when one man enslaved the others. So between 1861-2001, USA went from a spectacular rise, through crisis that made it strong to these days, when majority of citizens do not care (looking for electoral turn around) about anything, only for immediate satisfaction for temporary gain.
It's hard to say, every day was terrible. 2001 resulted in thousands of civilian deaths, and a wholly unnecessary conflict, in my opinion. 1941 may seem bad at a glace, and the attack on Pearl Harbor was quite terrible, but the attack rallied US support for WWII, and our participation in that war revived our terribly failing economy and put us up as one of the leading superpowers of the world. In the end, I'd say the worst of the dates is 1861, the US had lost more lives in the Civil War than in any other war, and almost as many US casualties as in all other wars combined, not to mentioned we destroyed half of our own country, which left tense feelings for some in the deep south.

These are all just my opinions, please don't take any of them too seriously.
1861-South shelled Fort Sumter and started a bloody civil war

1929-Stock market crashed, and started the great depression

1941-Japan bombed the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and brought the US into WWII

2001-Al Queda and Taliban forces hijacked civilian airliners and slammed them into the World Trade Center and the Pentegon.

But you also forgot two devestating assassinations

1865-John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln in Ford's Theatre

1961-Lee Harvey Oswald shot President John Fitzgerald Kennedy from the top floor of a warehouse in Dallas, Texas.

All in all these are the years many Americans will never forget.
Probably 1860 because that was when Lincoln the mass murderer and war criminal was elected. Don't believe me? Study the time period and think about everything Lincoln did. The man was worse than Bin Laden and Guevara yet he is lauded as a hero for "preserving" the Union.
1929

because there was a lot of terrible television on...
