-Well, i think it could be alot of different things. But, what i dont beleive is tat te world is going to end on december 31st in 2012. I beleive in someting different. Maybe they gave up on te calndar, or they were invaded by a different tribe and never got to continue it? What do you think? The Mayan Long Count calendar doesn't end, it just clicks over from 12.19.19.17.19 to 13.0.0.0.0 on 21st December 2012. That's all there is to it. It's the same as our calendar changing from 1999 to 2000. The Mayans themselves never predicted the end of the world would happen at that time.
All the doomsday predictions attached to this date are, without exception, unscientific nonsense, perpetrated by frauds and hoaxers. In order to fully understand the 2012 end of the world predications, then you should first understand the calendar that is at the center of this controversy. The current cycle, or baktun, of this calendar began on August 13th, 3114 B.C. This marked the end of the last period and the beginning of the current one. The baktun that we are currently living in is the thirteenth, and the end of this cycle is one that has been considered to have a large level of importance to the Mayan people, which is why so many people have come to the conclusion that this cycle鈥檚 end is one that will mean the end of the world as we know it.
While most of the other responses are quite helpful, I have a book to suggest you find at your library.
It not only discusses the Mayan Calendar but the evolution as to how we come to number the days the way we do currently.
The Mayan Calendar, by the way, is a very confusing one and one of the most complex ever developed.
IT DOESN'T END. The calendar is a cycle, as in it has no end. What people believe to be the doomsday prophecy is not a doomsday prophesy, but in fact a prophecy of a huge shift in power. The calendar predicts very common things, like famines and wars. It's like any good fortune teller, ambiguous enough to allow people to fill in their own gaps.
Because the mayan calander isnt like our paper calenders we use. They had a giant circle symbol (go look up an image of it) so it could only go up to a certain date. A picture of it will prove a lot. Here i just went onto google and found one for you.
