What was the cause for the Civil War?

-Basically Lincoln wanted to save the Union In his Illegal war

he used Slavery as an Excuse to stop the British from helping the South

this is some of the Things Lincoln did

No president in our history ever abused his power, trashed the US Constitution, or committed more crimes than Lincoln. He acted like a total Dictator.

He waged a war that cost the lives of 620,000 Americans. Including the murder of 50,000 innocent Southern civilians.

He suspended the writ of habeas corpus without the consent of Congress (as required by the Constitution).

He had duly elected State representatives illegally jailed without charges.

He illegally imprisoned without warrant or trial some 13,000 Northern citizens who opposed his policies

He illegally shut down and confiscated the printing presses of dozens of newspapers that had spoken out against him.

He re-instated and summarily promoted an Army officer who had been court marshaled and cashiered by the US Army for war crimes.

He illegally deported a member of Congress after said congressman criticized his unconstitutional behaviour.

He even had an arrest warrant issued for the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court because said justice refused to back his illegal actions.

Chief Justice Roger B Taney ruled that Lincolns actions were illegal, criminal and unconstitutional.

Lincoln locked up Maryland legislators to prevent them from voting to secede from the Union, that's kidnapping.

He invaded the South without the consent of Congress as required by the Constitution, that's a war crime.

He blockaded Southern ports without a Declaration of war, as required by the Constitution, that's another war crime.

He imprisoned without trial, hundreds of newspaper editors and owners and censored all newspaper and telegraph communication.

He created three new states without the consent of the citizens of those states in order to artificially inflate the Republican Party鈥檚 electoral vote.

He ordered Federal troops to interfere with Northern elections to assure his Party's victories.

He confiscated private property, including firearms, in violation of the Second Amendment; and effectively gutted the Tenth and Ninth Amendments as well.

He had his Generals attack US cities full of women and children and burn them to the ground.Basically Lincoln wanted to save the Union In his Illegal war

He had his Generals attack US cities full of women and children and burn them to the ground.Civil war is usually caused by citizens not agreeing with government policy. The citizens then try to overthrow the government by means of riots and upraising against government and government bodies. The African continent is prone to civil war (I should know, I live in Africa), also the mid east.
The growing puritan movement, especially in Parliament

11 years of Charles ruling without Parliament (The Divine Right of Kings)

Henrietta Maria, Charles' wife, was a Catholic

The rebellion in Scotland

As you haven't stated which civil war, I've assumed that you meant the English Civil War
From the beginning, there had been two "countries" in "America," the North - or New England - and the South. Both had different origins, different religious beliefs, different viewpoints on most if not all things. Remember, slavery - white and black - existed from the beginning in ALL colonies. Indeed, New Jersey had slaves during the (so called) Civil War. The South, agrarian and favoring small government differed markedly from the North, industrial and in favor of a large central government which could provide funds to their commercial enterprises (the "American system" or "mercantilism" as it was known in Britain). Since the South produced the most money (cotton was the oil of that day), high tariffs were imposed by the central government on imported goods (mostly to the South). The money was then used to finance Northern industries and political programs (the South paid 75% to 80% of the federal revenues).

The issue of slavery was of great importance, but not because the Northern states cared for blacks. Indeed, most of those states and territories had "Black Codes" which forbade blacks (free or slave) from ENTERING (much less settling) in those states. The South with fewer people (the North had huge numbers immigrating from Europe and Great Britain) and ever diminishing territory in relationship to the growing nation, was being forced into a position of a permanent political minority and becoming an economic colony of the North. Furthermore, radical abolitionists were trying to foment servile insurrection (slave uprisings) in order to kill Southern whites.

Finally, with the election of a purely sectional president - Lincoln - SOME Southern states determined to do as they were constitutionally permitted and form ANOTHER union more to their people's needs. When Lincoln called for the remaining states to provide soldiers to attack the seceding states (the only act defined as treason in the Constitution was making war on the states and aiding and abetting those who made such war), Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas and Tennessee went with their sister Southern states. Had no such demand been made, at least Virginia and North Carolina would probably have remained in the original Union.

The real reason for secession by the states of the South was the fact that the "federal government" had exceeded its authority under the Constitution and was destroying the rights of the Sovereign States and the People. They were right in that assessment as is obvious today.
Remember this statement reguarding ALL armed conflicts: "A rich man's war is a poor man's fight"

The war was about economics and keeping the country together. In short economic policies in the south (slavery) kept the country from growing. Ending slavery ment putting people on a payroll, both black and white. This increases federal revenue and fuels capitalistic growth. The moral obligations of the War tugged at people's conscience and prompted them to fight. In the north it was to free the slaves and hold the Union together in the south plantation owners called it states rights ( in reality plantation owners just wanted to protect their way of life ie: Rich man's war poor man's fight. only 1% of the south owned slaves and these were the wealthy that brought on the war) Based on statics and census it was the wealthy whites of the south that brought on the war, they used fear to convince many others that never owned another human that the government was after them. Remember "rich man's war poor man's fight"

I have studied this for 30 years and have the stats to back my thesis and it is way to long for this answer
Actual answer from U.S. History:

Sectionalism (Differences in North and South)

Expansion of Slavery (North was fine with slavery as long as it stayed in the South. When they started to spread west the North had to oppose)

State Rights (South) vs. Big Gov't (North) Popular sovereignty
It was mainly economic issues with slavery being a bug part.
Main was of course Slavery. Slave-owning South v. Abolitionist North. From the 1850 Compromise outbreak of violence increased. Then the Lincoln/Douglas debates and finally the election of Lincoln in 1860 made Civil War almost inevitable.

Other factors..

-Sectionalism...Very different values/priorities. North had become urbanised with growth of industry, farming, merchant shipping etc. South had the plantations/basic agriculture.

-Interpretation of the Constitution/ States Rights...South = loose interpretation of constitution, states retain power. North = Greater powers to Federal govt.

-Tariffs...Southerns/(most) Democrats wanted them reduced while Northern & Republican interests wanted them raised.
emancipation --- good luck
