-I can understand burning the entire city to the ground in an extreme form of protest, given the Rodney King situation. But why were African American businesses and people also targeted during the riots?
Some social commentary from anyone with a memory or living experience would be excellent. Racial commentary would be useless.Watch the tapes of the rioters. After initial clashes with authority, you will not see angry people. You will see people reveling in destruction for destruction's sake, assaulting and looting happily in the belief that it could be justified. The only targets were targets of opportunity. Why travel miles to loot something only to have to carry it back home? Here is a car parked on the street. It doesn't matter who owns it, it is there and it can be destroyed quickly. The faces are not frowning or bellowing in rage. They are energized, ecstatic even. Drunk with the thrill of mob power, they act purely on impulse. They dance in triumph. They delight in being bad so openly. The only methodic ones are gathering as much as they can while they can, knowing this opportunity will not last. Keeping quiet and determined to hold onto what they have seized, they move quickly in and out knowing the first ones will have the best pickings. Looters loot each other in turn--the most violent winning the spoils.
Compare this with what has been seen this year in North Africa, if you can. Or look on youtube and watch the sports riot in--Amsterdam was it? The european rioters were much more akin to the California rioters in comportment and demeanor. The North African rioters were focused and maintained a form of discipline. Of course, the media or their manipulators get to say whether a riot occurred or a protest, ya?
